Four Warning Signs of an Affiliate Marketing Fraud
Affiliate marketing is an online business that can provide a good income for you. You can select a product that appeals to a particular group or niche of the market's clientele, and it will earn money steadily. You can be watching your favorite television show, or relaxing at the beach, or even sleeping, and buyers will still be clicking on your affiliate link and buying the product. Another benefit of affiliate marketing is that it does not require much money to begin your program, so there is little or no monetary risk involved. You do need to be careful when looking for a program to join, however, as there are as many sham programs that will just steal your money and disappear as there are authentic marketing programs. Here are four warning signs to help you avoid fraudulent marketing schemes.
First, stay away from a company that offers an affiliate program, but doesn't have a website. The whole purpose of affiliate marketing is to direct potential buyers to a website where they can make a purchase, so there must be a website to which you can direct them. So, as a first caution, find a company that has a functioning website that is designed well. Because it's so easy to design a website, this isn't a foolproof method of detecting a hoax, but a definite warning sign is a company with no website or with a poorly-designed website.

Second, stay away from any company that has nothing to sell. This is for the same reason. The reason for affiliate marketing is to promote something for people to buy, so there must be something for them to buy. That something may be a tangible item, an electronic book, or a service, but it must be something that can be purchased.
Third, avoid a company that has not built up a good reputation. A beginning business may use an affiliate marketing program to launch their enterprise. That doesn't mean they don't have a good product, but you should try it yourself before you join their affiliate program and begin promoting it. The best scenario is to join a company that already has a good reputation in its market niche.
Fourth and last, be suspicious of a company that wants you to pay money to promote their product. Some valid businesses do have a small charge to join their affiliate program, but in this case it is hard to tell the good programs from the bogus programs. A reputable company usually will not charge you to do their advertising for them. A few legitimate businesses do charge a fee, but unless you have a trusted recommendation or some other way to check out the business, you should avoid these companies.
If you have checked into affiliate marketing at all, you already know there are hundreds of programs offered by various companies. It is a good business practice. You promote their product, and they give you a percentage of the sales you bring them. You just need to be careful because there are always some frauds among the genuine in any good business. An offer may look and sound like a good deal, but the perpetrator will steal your money and disappear with it. In summary, avoid companies without a website and companies without a product to sell. Also stay away from companies that have not established a good reputation, unless you want to help promote a beginning business venture. And unless you have reliable inside information, avoid companies that charge you when you join their marketing program. But if you observe these signs of danger, you should have no problem finding a profitable affiliate marketing program with a reliable company.
